Rare Papier Mache Driver R.Simpson 1890s

£999.00

This is a rare Driver by Robert Simpson of Carnoustie. The head was made using compressed wood pulp and they can to be known as papier mache clubs because they had little resistance to the wet weather. This club head is of the transitional teardrop shape. The head and shaft exhibit absolutely minimal wear and this club must have only been used for a couple of rounds. The shaft and head are clearly stamped R.SIMPSON. The head also carries the mark PATENT and No.21475. When thsi club was found the neck carried no whipping and this has been replaced. The grip is hard leather. A very rare beast, let alone in this condition. There is some very feint pencilled words on the bottom of the head which I believe could be the original price but it is very difficult to read.
