McEwan Playclub c1850/1860
£1,995.00
This is an early long nose playclub by McEwan. The face has a leather insert. The shaft is not hickory, I believe it to be lemonwood. McEwan were said to use lemonwood on their premier clubs. The lead weight in the head is original and perfectly secure. The horn is original. The shaft I believe to be original although it has been re-whipped at the neck at sometime in its life as the gauge of twine looks too fine to be of 1850/60 vintage. The club has a sticker on the shaft just below te grip. After doing some research I believe this club was once in the John Letters golf museum. The grip is the original, or a very early replacement, and is has traces of pine tar on it. This was used by players to gain extra grip. Overall, a great club in great condition that would add to any antique golf club collection.
