R.White Cleek 1885

This club was made by Robert White of St.Andrews, Scotland, a blacksmith who became a full-time golf club maker. The head has a dark rough patina. The name stamp is very feint but it is there. The shaft is in fantastic condition. The grip is padded sheepskin and is quite short ...only about 8 inches down the shaft. I have seen similarly short grips on other cleeks by John Gray and Carrick and I believe there might have been a period in the 1880s when having this type of short grip was fashionable...perhaps one of the champion players did this and others copied, further research might give some surprising findings. Because of the condition of the head this club is priced accordingly..it is quite a rare club.
