John Gray Cleek c1880

John Gray of Prestwick was a blacksmith who made clubs and was perhaps the first iron headed club maker to mark his work. This is a smooth faced cleek (equivalent to a modern 2 or 3 iron). The head has a dark patina but the stamping of his name is nice and clear. The shaft is slightly bowed and has a two inch section of linen whipping about a third of the way up the shaft. The club is its original length and has not been cut down. The thick padded sheepskin grip appears original. A nice rare and early blacksmith made iron.
